Thus and so, I began my research by reading other such memoirs of teachers plying their trade abroad, the most prominent of which that took place in Japan being Learning to Bow by Bruce Feiler. I imagined, in my heart of hearts, that, since I had had a homeschooled and very sheltered life, and my Japan job had been my first “real” job post-college, and I had the fairly unique experience of teaching at an all-girls private Christian school, my experiences there might make the basis of an interesting narrative.
